Humankind – University of Leicester and Calke Abbey

7th June 2019

We have been privileged to be asked by the University of Leicester to be part of this exciting exhibition and Calke’s history of isolation and sharing new stories of kindness and compassion.

‘Calke’s story has long been centred around the ‘reclusive’ Harpur-Crewe family, who were thought of as eccentric and disconnected from society. Research with the University of Leicester has revealed new perspectives of this ‘isolated’ family – moments of deep connection, kindness, and compassion.

In the family apartments this year, you’ll discover moments in the lives of six characters from Calke’s household – from the famously ‘isolated’ baronet himself, to the Housekeeper with a secret she couldn’t share with anyone at Calke. Find out more about each person featured in the exhibition.

This thought-provoking, audio-visual experience allows you to reflect on the difficulties faced by members of the household, and how they overcame these difficulties through human connections and kindness.’ (Ref:nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey)

Go and visit yourself to see how this family were one of the ‘original food banks’ of their time and pick up a card on how you can get involved in random act of kindness.
